Pummel
Pummel is the dark and monophonic brother of my previous FM synth, Plume.
Pummel was designed in a different way - not as a device to be used in a singular way - rather, as a playground for all things dark, low and aggressive. Pummel is capable of generating heavy kick drums, synth bass, hits, and all types of evolving noises. Pummel invites you to experiment. Twist knobs that you're not sure of. Add in other modules, or remove them. Randomize buttons on each module and a global randomize button allow you to find happy accidents, turn sounds into new sounds, and just generally explore and find new inspiration quickly.
Device walkthrough:
Pummel has many modules and I recommend that you don't necessarily use them all at once. Use what you need.
Pummel includes the following modules:
- Kick drum generator
- Saw bass synth (with selectable second oscillator)
- Noise generator
- FM synth
- The Magic panel with seven carefully crafted modes to bolster, twist and ignite your patch
- Tremolo, spread and a filter for final polish
While the kick drum has its own controls for the length of the tail, the rest of the modules share a common volume envelope to allow the different textures to act as one cohesive sound. The saw bass module also includes a drawable pitch envelope - allowing this module to also function as more of a 909 style bass drum, if you wish. There are also frequency modulation controls to be found in both the kick module and the saw bass module, allowing metallic and other-worldly sounds - not to mention the third instance of FM in the FM module. Because FM is lovely.
Then we have some effects: tremolo, stereo spread, a filter, and, of course, the Magic panel. If you've used my previous synth, Plume, you'll be familiar with this already. The magic panel consists of seven modes, each of which with its own formula of mangling, flanging, crushing and more. The amount knob will behave differently depending on which mode is selected. For some modes, it will increase distortion while filtering parts of the signal. Other modes you'll find its increasing the feedback of a flanger, while other modes you'll hear some frequency shifting, some rhythmic chopping, etc. While Pummel can make many nice sounds without the Magic panel engaged, it can also make many gnarly and aggressive sounds with one of the seven Magic modes turned on. Experiment and be rewarded. Also, please note that since Pummel responds to the notes played, ensure you're playing a nice low octave note if you're looking for a kick drum or bass sound, and, of course, higher notes for less bass-y things like leads, plucks, snares, blips and bloops.
Again, I really want to stress that this device is to be thought of as a playground. You don't have to engage all the modules to create a sound. I just wanted all these certain "tools" to be available to a producer - choose wisely and create what you wish, or hit that randomize button and mangle the sounds until it's what you wished for.
